Mime Theatre Studio Celebrates 20th Anniversary
This year, Mime Theatre Studio, established in 2001, is celebrating twenty years of training actors in the art of Theatrical Mime, helping them master the use of physical expression for stage, film, and television acting. Founded and led by noted movement coach and mime coach Lorin Eric Salm, the program has welcomed hundreds of actors and other performers from Los Angeles and around the country.
LOS ANGELES, CA, January 12, 2021: In a city replete with acting schools, Mime Theatre Studio has distinguished itself as one of the few focused on the body as an essential instrument of the actor’s craft. Although few of its students are necessarily looking to become mime actors, Mime Theatre Studio offers performers a greater understanding of how to use the body expressively, no matter what their field of performance. Students have included actors, dancers, singers, circus artists, comedians, magicians, motion capture / performance capture actors, animators, and others.
The program of short-term workshops, ongoing classes, and private coaching is led by Lorin Eric Salm, a former student of legendary French mime Marcel Marceau, and a graduate of Marceau’s Paris International School of Mimodrama. In addition to open-to-the-public offerings at the school, Salm provides movement coaching and mime coaching for major Hollywood film and television productions, working with talent from background actors to star-name principals. He trained Academy Award-nominee Jesse Eisenberg for the 2020 feature film Resistance, in which Eisenberg played a young Marcel Marceau. “I spent about nine months with this really brilliant guy, Lorin Eric Salm, who’s just this amazing teacher,” Eisenberg praised. Four-time Emmy-nominated actor-comedian Damon Wayans, whom Salm coached privately for several months, commented, “He was a great coach. Helped me make my stand up more expressive and animated.” Salm also conducts training sessions for Cirque du Soleil’s resident Las Vegas productions and international touring shows and has trained animators in character movement at top studios, including Walt Disney Animation Studios, DreamWorks Animation, and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
Beginning in 2001, Mime Theatre Studio held classes at various dance studios in the North Hollywood Arts District and Santa Monica, before finding a home in 2013 at the historical landmark Studio Theatre at St. Denis Building on Cahuenga Blvd., across the street from Universal Studios Hollywood. Beginning students attend two-day intensive introductory workshops, and students interested in more advanced training continue with weekly classes. With the onset of the pandemic in 2020, Mime Theatre Studio began offering online classes, and now serves not only local students, but also a greater number of students from across the United States and Canada.
About Mime Theatre Studio
Founded in 2001, Mime Theatre Studio is a unique Los Angeles acting school, training performers how to effectively use the body expressively as an essential part of their acting craft. Training local professional and amateur actors through in-person workshops and ongoing classes, and participants across the U.S. and Canada through online classes, the curriculum teaches performers and artists of all types — also including dancers, singers, circus artists, comedians, magicians, motion capture / performance capture actors, and animators — how to express character, thought, emotion, and dramatic action with the body. Led by noted movement coach and mime coach Lorin Eric Salm, a former student of legendary French mime Marcel Marceau, the program teaches theatrical mime as a serious performing art, exploring the physical techniques and dramatic concepts that make for moving comic, dramatic, and poetic performances.
