Mime Theatre Studio’s workshops in Mime Theatre introduce some of the fundamental concepts and skills of the art. Participants will take part in various exercises and explorations, and will learn new physical and dramatic skills.
This workshop is useful for those who wish to learn the basics of performing Mime as an autonomous theatre art form, as well as for those who wish to explore how Mime can enhance their work in other arts, such as acting for film/TV/stage, dance, circus arts, storytelling, singing, improv, stand-up comedy, motion capture / performance capture, etc. The instruction can be tailored to participants from young children to adults, and is excellent for theatre or dance companies, and drama or dance students, whether as general skill building or for work on a particular production.
Concepts covered are selected form the following:
- Breath as a basis for physical life on stage
- The origin point and path of movement
- Isolations
- Expressing the internal world (thought and emotion)
- Physical relationship to the external world (this work includes illusion skills)
- The physical character
Workshops can be conducted as a one-time event or as a series of several classes. The minimum duration of a single meeting is one hour, although we highly recommend at least two hours at a time (especially for one-time workshops), as it can be difficult to cover a significant amount of material in less time. The selection and number of concepts covered in your workshop will depend on the total number of hours allotted.

Space Work & Physical Character Expression for Improv
For improv actors who wish to improve the quality of their space work / object work and learn how to use more physicality to express the personalities of the characters they create.
Click for Details
Improv acting is more than just verbal — it’s physical and visual. Space work helps create a physical environment for the audience out of thin air, and helps them see, and believe in, the setting in which the characters exist. This workshop offers techniques for creating the illusion of objects, environments, and other characters that help communicate a story.
Characters should do more than speak. A character’s personality comes out through more than just what they say. It comes out through how they stand, how they move, and not just what they do, but how they do it. This workshop teaches how to use the body effectively to physically express characters, and how to maximize the visual impact of a performance. It includes techniques for creating new characters on the spot as well as more fully developing the characters in one’s personal repertoire.
